Christian “Boo” Boucousis: The Fighter Pilot CEO

Christian “Boo” Boucousis’ story is the real world example of how fighter pilots use the skills developed during their military careers to succeed in business. He is now a high-performance speaker and CEO of Afterburner Australia, CEO of Mode Developments and owner of Australian Aviation Magazine.

Christian BooBoo served as an elite Royal Australia Air Force fighter pilot for over 10 years. During this time, he was seconded to fly with the Royal Air Force in the UK and served as an instructor teaching complex planning to multi-government executives at the esteemed Australia Defence Force Joint Warfare Centre.

After being diagnosed with a serious medical condition, Boo could no longer fly and his career as a fighter pilot was over. Boo knew he had 1 of 2 choices: to accept a ground job and watch his mates fly overhead every day, or take a risk and try something new.

Boo embraced the challenge and, together with his best mate, moved to Afghanistan to assist the United Nations and other NGOs deliver on projects in some of the world’s most complex environments. This was the start of their company CTG Global. The first contract Boo secured for CTG Global was worth approximately $2.5m USD and, within 3 years, CTG Global grew into a multi-million-dollar operation. Based in Dubai the company employed over 1600 people and provided humanitarian services in an ethical and responsible manner around the world.

After selling CTG Global to a multi-national, Boo returned to Australia and identified a new opportunity in the property development space, re-setting his focus on innovative and sustainable building methods. This led to the creation of Boo’s specialist development company, Mode Developments. Mode developed a 17 storey hotel in Perth CBD using pre-fabricated modularised structures. The 17 storey building was erected in 11 weeks and has a total project timeframe of 12 months (as opposed to two years if built using traditional methods).

Boo is also the CEO/Director of Afterburner Australia, a leading high-performance and executive coaching organisation that shows how teams and companies can cut through complexity and get things done…the fighter pilot way.

In this episode we discuss:

  1. The FLEX methodology: how to create clarity and execute like a fighter pilot in your business
  2. Managing distractions in the modern world
  3. How to be a high-performing leader and build the right culture for imperfect execution
